The district of Rupnagar is named after its district headquarters, the town of Rupnagar. Formerly known as Ropar, the town of Rupnagar is said to have been founded by a Raja called Rokeshar. The town is of considerable antiquity. Recent excavations and explorations conducted at Rupnagar indicate that the first civilized folk to settle here were the Harappans. Gurudwara Bhatta Sahib-Gurudwara Bhatta Sahib is situated in the village Kotla Nihang, at the outskirts of Rupnagar town. It was built in the memory of Guru Gobind Sing.
Anandpur Sahib-On the left bank of the Sutlej river, 40 kilometers from Rupnagar town, is situated Anandpur Sahib, the "abode of bliss". It is one of the sacred worship place of the Sikhs.
